JBL is an American company that manufactures audio equipment, including loudspeakers and headphones. There are two independent divisions within the company; JBL Consumer produces audio equipment for the consumer home market, while the JBL Professional produces professional equipment for the studio, installed sound, tour sound, portable sound production and DJand cinema markets. JBL was founded by James Bullough Lansing — who was an American audio engineer and loudspeaker designer most notable for establishing two audio companies that bear his name, Altec Lansing and JBL, the latter taken from his initials.

Lansing and his business partner Ken Decker started a company inin Los Angeles, manufacturing six- and eight-inch speaker drivers for radio consoles and radio sets. The company was called "Lansing Manufacturing Company", from March 1, Blackburn were part of the team that developed the Shearer Hornwith Lansing Manufacturing producing the compression driver and the 15XS bass driver.

Lansing Manufacturing was the only one selling them as Shearer Horns. Based on the experience developed with the Shearer Horn, Lansing produced the Iconic System loudspeaker for cinemas. The Iconic was a two-way speaker using a inch woofer for the low frequencies and a compression driver for the highs. InDecker was killed in an airplane crash, the company soon began having financial troubles and, inLansing Manufacturing Company was bought by Altec Service Corporation, after which the name changed to " Altec Lansing ".

InJBL produced their first products, the model D inch loudspeaker and the model D high-frequency driver. The D remained in the JBL catalog through the s. Both of these were near-copies of Altec Lansing products. The first original product was the D, a inch transducer for which a variant remained in production for the next 55 years.

The D featured a four-inch flat ribbon wire voice coil and Alnico V magnet. Two other products were the inch D and the 8-inch D cone drivers.

The Marquardt Corporation gave the company early manufacturing space and a modest investment. William H. Thomas, the treasurer of Marquardt Corporation, represented Marquardt on Lansing's board of directors. InMarquardt took over operation of JBL.

InMarquardt was purchased by General Tire Company. The new company, not interested in the loudspeaker business, severed ties with Lansing. Lansing reincorporated as James B. Lansing and moved the newly formed company to its first private location, on Fletcher Drive, Los Angeles. Lansing was noted as an innovative engineer, but a poor businessman. Decker, his business partner, had died in in an airplane crash.

In the late s, Lansing struggled to pay invoices and ship product. Possibly as a result of deteriorating business conditions and personal issues, he committed suicide on September 4, Soon after, Thomas purchased Mrs. Lansing's one-third interest in the company and became the sole owner. Thomas is credited with revitalizing the company and spearheading a period of strong growth for the two decades following the founding of JBL. Early products included the model high-frequency driver and the ultra high frequency UHF ring-radiator driver.

World Wide Stereo's JBL Synthesis Theater Reviewed on AVS Forum

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that this rather short period of my life would so much influence my thinking and turn out to be so enriching. Even a dozen years later I still draw on these experiences. The theatre stage and auditorium were equipped with speakers from the same manufacturer as well as by JBL for the side towers. While the latter looked normal again—hornloaded tweeters but otherwise classic cabinets—the main speakers were unlike anything else used at the time.

They were powerful twin enclosure designs. The subwoofer unit sported four 30cm woofers in a sealed enclosure, the other unit was equipped with a midrange driver loaded into a massive horn over a meter long and a tweeter loaded into an only slightly smaller horn. What's more, the stage monitors used 36cm drivers with a centrally placed horn tweeter. Such designs were unique then when most PA systems were based on small integrated units like those from JBL. From a young age he showed an interest in DIY and radios.

Little did he know then that his life would become so associated with transducers that for many his initials would forever be synonymous with speakers.

It all started in when Western Electric created a department to provide support and design of speakers and electronics for movie theaters. By WE sold its shares in this department. A year later they were bought out by a group of their own engineers. Those gave it a new name, Altec Service Company Altec as in 'all technical'.

The company did well but to grow needed production facilities to manufacture its own products. For this purpose it purchased Lansing Manufacturing Co. Now they changed their name to Altec Lansing. After a short time they were awarded a government contract for the development of magnetic detectors for U.

The research in that field resulted in the Alnico V magnet material that would also find use in loudspeakers. There he founded Lansing Manufacturing Company to produce car speakers. To continue expansion, his company then moved to New York by October 6 th of the same year saw the premier of The Jazz Singer.

It was the first ever feature-length Warner Brothers movie with sound. It became a tremendous success. Now the history of high-quality loudspeakers began in earnest. Between and they co-developed basic design ideas for hornloaded speakers which would become the industry standard. Everything went smoothly until military manoeuvres in killed Ken Decker in an accident. This businessman had reliably dealt with Lansing Manufacturing's financial matters.

An attempt to find a replacement failed. By the company found itself on the verge of bankruptcy. What helped it survive was the acquisition of its shares by Altec Service Company.Thoughtful design plus superior gear are the ingredients that combine to make movie night special. The absolute best way to enjoy your favorite flicks is in a bespoke theater that features the best of the best in state-of-the-art gear.

Rooms like this are incredibly rare and if you've never experienced one, you might not even be aware of what's possible. That's right, this home theater has thousands of watts of true audiophile amplification on tap. Meaning, if you use the room to experience a symphony orchestra, you'll have an authentic high-end audio experience, one that'll transport you to the concert hall while you ponder how such verisimilitude is even possible.

This system has Dolby Atmos processing, so it can immerse you with cinematic sound in three dimensions. But unlike lesser Atmos systems where effects just jump from speaker to speaker, in this theater sounds can appear to come from anywhere and go anywhere. Queue up an action scene like the opening to Unbroken to experience Atmos sound so impactful and profound, it will leave you with an adrenaline rush that lasts for days! Make no mistake, this is a rare "true reference" system that will not show a hint of strain or distortion, no matter how intense the action.

The calibration process to achieve this precision is sophisticated and utilizes nine microphones to tune the room, including one specialized mic that can "hear" 3D sound. The result is perfectly balanced sound with crisp treble, clear midrange and bass so tight, it translates micro-dynamics into textures that make live music concert films sound and feel live.

Pictured: It's what's behind the walls that makes this such a special home theater. The theatrical experience of this room is the complete package, delivering that much-coveted "total willing suspension of disbelief" because it puts you right inside the movie. Indeed, the audio performance of this JBL Synthesis and Mark Levinson theater is so transcendent and such a boost to the viewing experience, if you owned such a theater, you could proudly invite the directors of your favorite films over for movie night—that's how good it is!

This specialized microphone measures sound in 3D space. There's a lot more that goes into making this room work than the gear I mentioned, including the door that seals the room, acoustic treatments, furniture, automation, lighting, and of course, calibration. Of course, if you want a room like this you have to actually build it, and while the theater may look the same today as it did before the installation of JBL Synthesis speakers plus processing and Mark Levinson amplification, that similarity is only skin deep.

The audio gear alone in this rarefied room does not come cheap. From there, progress was rapid with the teardown and new build taking another six weeks or so since the room itself furniture and wall panels was already built. Plus, all this specialized gear requires expertise to install and program so that the user experience is seamless and intuitive.

In this video below, Robert talks about what went into making this room such a great place to experience music and movies:. It sets the bar for public home theater demos, so if you happen to be in the Ardmore areayou should not miss the chance to hear it for yourself. World Wide Stereo will be hosting private screenings every Saturday in October featuring demos, movie snacks, and a chance to win a "movie night" in the theater with your friends and family.

Available in a choice of walnut or black walnut finishes, the JBL can be used in 2-channel systems as well as JBL Synthesis applications in a 2. The was the first JBL design to combine a compression-driver and Bi-Radial horn with a large-format woofer.

The new JBL incorporates a number of improvements over the and its successors.
